3000 cyclists tested the championship race course
Up to 3000 cyclists, young and old, on bikes or special-aid bicycles took part in the open ride around the race course on Thursday. The same course as the athletes will use in the road races starting Friday.
Story by Elisabeth Farstad
This cycling race for all became a bit wet, but quite fun!
- It was very nice to see so many children participating. Their pedals went fast as drumsticks, with no gears left to use. They rode in their pace but everyone was very eager – and very sweet, said a pleased participant.
For many of the participants, the coolest thing was to test the course used in the road races. The atmosphere was great, and the unity amongst the cyclists as well.
- It has been very important for us to get as many as possibly involved and use the whole city. We hope to change the attitude people have about cycling so that taking your bike will be the number one way of transportation, either it is to work, school or other activities, says Chief of Events Helge Stormoen.
Thursday the city and the race course belonged to the public. For the next three days, it will belong to the World Championship participants and the world’s best cyclists.
