Sun shines with double gold for Sunweb
It was a thrilling race to the finish line when Team Sunweb took the men´s TTT gold
The men´s Team Time Trial finished of the first day of racing at the UCI 2017 World Road
At the end German Team Sunweb had the best finish and when runner up
BMC Racing Team passed the finish line they were just under ten seconds behind. Third
place was settled between Team Sky and Quick Step-Floors. Sky, being one of the favourites
to take the victory before the race, took the final and last medal coming in third.
Time Trialling is a ”marginal gains” race and it came down to the last 7 kilometres to settle
the battle between the front teams. Team Sunweb consisting of Tom Dumoulin, Lennard
Kamna, Wilco Kelderman, Søren Kragh Andersen, Michael Matthews and Sam Oomen
showed a great team effort in the final corners and went all the way to the top of the
The roads surrounding the course were packed with spectators! To have this many people at
a Team Time Trial, highlights that Norway and Bergen shows how a true ”Folkefest” is done.
The Team Time Trial course surely makes up for one of the most scenic ones since the event
was reintroduced for the World Championships 15 years ago. However, the winning teams,
drilled to perform at the level of perfection, would only have a blurred vision in this speedy
event. The Team Time Trial course departed from the Askøy archipelago just outside Bergen
making their way to the decisive climb at Birkelundsbakken, where most teams at that point
were being reduced to four or five riders from the initial six.
At the first intermediate the final top five teams, Sunweb, Sky, BMC, Quick Step and Orica
was already in front. Noticable Pro Continental team CCC Sprandi Polkowice had a strong
start passing the intermediate on a good pace. In the lead before the starting World Tour
Teams were getting there at least. Team Sky looked as well drilled as expected setting a
really high pace but at this point the top five were within 14 seconds apart.
The decisive moment
Making aacquaintance with Birkelundsbakken the teams started to be reduced in numbers.
When Team Sky´s Geraint Thomas had to let go his team was down to only four. Team
Sunweb making their way to the top, taking a 55 seconds lead and still with all six riders it
looked more than promising. BMC Racing Team however were in the lead with three
seconds starting the descent and final roads in the city center.
All the way to the finish
The final kilometers was truly exciting when the top two teams were pacing each other
within a second. The four last riders of the BMC Racing Team tried to keep together but
Team Sunweb’s strong finish made the differnce. Winning by 8.29 seconds Team Sunweb
could take their historical second win of the day. Team Sky could regroup in the end and
when Quick Step Floors passed the finish line after a fierce finish Team Sky took third place
with around 12 seconds.
A truly exiting race just at the start of this championships.
More to come and with this great crowd, it will be a joy!
