Medals awarded - crowd makes the day
Day one of racing is done and dusted. Crowned by many powerful performances this day will also be remembered for the huge turnout of spectators.
When medals for the Men´s Elite Team Time Trial were awarded Team Sunweb riders stepped up to the podium still accompanied by the loud tireless cheering crowd.
The winning team, with the foundation in experienced riders such as Tom Dumoulin (Netherlands) and Australian Michael Matthews, led the way onto the podium with young German rider Lennard Kamna, who after the ceremony said:
It’s an amazing feeling, I’ve never thought about it, especially when I think back on one year, it's great to be in a squad that can go good with TTT, I’m quite happy”
Team Time Trialling is really fast-paced road racing and the disc wheels mounted on the aerodynamic bikes makes a distinct loud sound. Today the sound was drowned in cheering.
The teams passing the tough climb of Birkelundsbakken got that extra push from the colourful and noisy audience.
Upcoming days spectators will have to opportunity to share on more young and upcoming riders. Starting Monday with the tough individual time trial, first out Women Junior races and later on Monday afternoon the men U23 continue to battle for the UCI 2017 World Road Championship medals. And of course, more medal ceremonies at Torgallmenningen square.
