Mobilizing the local community for the "grand finale"
The wild and authentic coastal landscape of Western Norway will mark the start Men Elite Road Race, as well as the Men Junior Road Race. We can expect to see a major gathering of the locals, boats and vessels that will wish to celebrate the riders once they get there.
The start of the road races the last weekend will be from Rong in Øygarden. A street artist is now working on decorating the portal that all the cyclists will go through.
The teams will have a rolling 2 km towards the spectacular Rognesund Bridge. Before and after the riders pass by, there will be bungee jumping from the bridge, a breath taking experience, with more than a 30 meters fall.
Also around a thousand kids will dance for the audience and the TV-viewers, a stunt that was done in 2013 on the majestic bridge.
We can expect to see a major gathering of the locals, boats and vessels that will wish to celebrate the riders once they get there. Local artists and kids from the region are working on a so called “cycle symphony” that will be shown during the event .
World record in Vikings
In Fjell the cyclists and the the TV-viewers will meet vikings everywhere as the municipality will be trying to set a world record in the amount of people, dressed up in viking costumes.
After the bridge the teams have a flat 20 km towards Kolltveit. The beautiful coastal landscape will give the riders small chances to rest before they face a small climb (400 m) at Kolltveit. After a quick descent, the teams face another flat 3 km before they cross the magnificent Sotra Bridge. The suspension bridge is 1236 metres long, and has a free span of 468 metres with 50 metres of clearance. For both the riders and the TV-audience, this will be something to remember.
Both Fjell and Øygarden are looking forward to welcoming the world to their islands.
- As mayor of Fjell, it’s a great pleasure for me to welcome cyclists, spectators and everyone else involved in this event. We’re pleased and proud to co-host the UCI Road World Championships. The municipalities boats a rich cultural and sporting life, with large, modern arenas for sports enthusiasts. There is also an active cycling club – Sotra Cykleklubb – involving adults and young people from both Fjell and the neighbouring municipalities. I can sense that the level of interest is rising as this major sporting event draws near! We have a strong tradition out here of a positive attitude to volunteering in all age groups, something that will stand us in good stead for a big event like this, says Marianne Sandahl Bjorøy.
