The green island of Askøy just outside of Bergen will be the starting point for the UCI Road World Championships in 2017.
The Island of Contrasts
Askøy is an Island that stretches from southeast to northwest just outside of the City of Bergen. After the Askøy bridge was finished in 1992 Askøy has been connected to the mainland. It is now one of the most thriving municipalities in Norway with regards to growth in population and business development.
Askøy is full of contrasts. On the eastside there is the green lush landscape, whilst on the south and west we find the quiet agricultural landscape typically found in more southern places. And top the north the amazing coastal landscape of Herdle opens up like a jewel.
Activities and events
There are many alternatives for nature based activities at Askøy. Fishing, boatlife, hiking and cycling are amongst the most popular.
Askøy is also known as having a thriving cultural life and a rich sporting life. In 2016 Askøy will host the Norwegian Championships in Athletics at Ravnanger. The same venue will be used as the start area for the UCI Road World Championships in 2017.
